Way back in 2005, whenever I had to answer that inevitable Hollywood dinner party question, “What are you working on?” my straight-faced answer, “Oh, it’s this new show about ballroom dancing with celebrities” would elicit raised eyebrows and a quick rejoinder to the effect of, yeah good luck with that. But when the show finally premiered that summer, DANCING WITH THE STARS was an instant ratings smash and cultural phenomenon. I was fortunate to have a front-row seat – literally – to witness the show coming together and learn from the many talented people behind the scenes who fought against the odds adapting the original BBC format into one of the most successful competition series in TV history.
